Updates Regarding the Commissioned Corps
Using our website, emails, social media, the newsletter Frontline, and a global network of Local Branches, COA sends members updates affecting the Commissioned Corps, the professional categories, retired officers, and public health in general.
Representation on Capitol Hill
A top priority for COA is to ensure parity between the Commissioned Corps and other uniformed services. Some wins include transferability of Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits and whistle-blower protections.
Participation in a Local Branch
PHS officers value a local connection with their peers and to the communities in which they live and work. COA has Local Branches throughout the country and overseas. Click here to locate a Local Branch near you.
The COA ribbon is authorized to be worn on the PHS uniform by members in good standing when attending COA functions. Contact us if you did not receive a ribbon when you joined COA.

Discount for Certified in Public Health (CPH) Exam
COA members receive a reduced rate to sit for the CPH exam, the only voluntary core credential for public health professionals. CPH professionals raise the bar and enhance the public health profession through their exemplary academic and leadership skills.
The CPH exam is administered by the National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE). Since the inaugural CPH exam in 2008, a few thousand public health professionals have passed the CPH exam.
Most Public Health Service officers would qualify under the eligibility criteria. Individuals who have a bachelor’s degree and at least five subsequent years’ public health work experience will be eligible to take the CPH exam.
Take this opportunity to set yourself apart. Passing the CPH Exam may be another feather in your cap for promotion within the Commissioned Corps.
"While attending the COF conference in New Orleans I visited the CPH booth. After learning more about the CPH I decided to take the plunge and take the certification exam. It had been over six years since completing graduate school and I thought that obtaining the certification would be a good way to refresh my memory and stay current in the field of public health." - CDR Megan Mattingly, USPHS
